Job Summary :
The Recreation Assistant is instrumental in supporting and enhancing the various recreational programs and activities provided by the department. With a focus on participant engagement and satisfaction, they assist in ensuring all events and activities run smoothly, safely, and in alignment with the department’s objectives.
Key Responsibilities :
Program Support :
- Assist in organizing, setting up, and breaking down recreational events and activities.
- Facilitate participant involvement by guiding them through rules and protocols.
- Monitor and distribute equipment, ensuring its safe usage and return.
Safety and Supervision :
- Actively monitor events and activities to uphold safety standards.
- Address any unsafe behaviors or conditions, reporting major concerns to the supervisor.
- Maintain current certifications in first aid and CPR, providing immediate assistance when required.
Customer Interaction :
- Serve as a point of contact for participants, answering questions, and offering guidance.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Collect feedback and suggestions to continually improve the recreational offerings.
Administrative Duties :
- Support the coordinator in scheduling, reservations, and record-keeping.
- Assist in tracking equipment inventory and flagging items in need of repair or replacement.
Facility Maintenance :
- Help in ensuring the cleanliness and readiness of recreational facilities and areas.
- Set up necessary equipment and furniture for scheduled events.
Required Qualifications :
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Basic First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with people, especially children and seniors.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Management, Physical Education, or a related field.
- Experience in a community service, recreational, or similar role.
- Specialized training or certifications related to specific recreational disciplines (e.g., sports coaching, arts and crafts).
Working Conditions :
- Work settings may vary from indoor community centers to outdoor parks and camps.
- Physical demands can include lifting equipment, standing or walking for extended periods, and occasional exposure to varying weather conditions.
Compensation :
Hourly Wage: $15 – $20 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Overtime: Eligible for overtime pay at 1.5 times the hourly rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week.
