Position Overview
PACU Nurses, commonly known as Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Nurses, play a pivotal role in the recovery of patients following surgical procedures. These nurses primarily focus on caring for patients as they regain consciousness after anaesthesia, ensuring the postoperative recovery is smooth, safe, and complications-free.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitoring Vital Signs: Continually observe and record patients’ vital signs and ensure they remain within the expected range following anaesthesia.
- Pain Management: Assess patients’ pain or discomfort level and administer appropriate pain medications as prescribed.
- Patient Education: Instruct patients and their families on post-surgery care, potential side effects, and the importance of follow-up appointments.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, noting any reactions, complications, and the overall recovery process.
- Administering Medications: Provide necessary medications as ordered by the attending physician or anaesthetist.
- Collaboration: Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other medical professionals to ensure optimal patient care during the postoperative period.
- Maintain a Sterile Environment: Uphold strict cleanliness and infection control standards in the PACU.
Qualifications
- An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Valid state RN license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Previous experience in a PACU, ICU, or surgical unit is often preferred.
- Strong communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work under pressure.
- Comprehensive understanding of anaesthesia and its potential side effects on patients.
